Have student loan debt. The OC is a college and W&F statement says they "represent the above creditor" to collect the amount due. (they also list their fee which is about 30% MORE on top of the debt. My mother has offered to pay, but only to the OC because she get royally screwed once paying a "collection service" and the reviews on this bunch are shady at best. I called to see if the OC would accept her check and was told "no, because we hired it out on the premise that this company would get paid and we won't accept her check now."
Is this not ILLEGAL? IF the OC still owns the debt why can I not pay the OC since these W&F people don't OWN this debt at all?
(Also, W&F are refusing to send me a DV as my mother suggested. They simply sent me an email saying "we are authorized to collect this or see you in court" basically). My mother says that is also illegal, but I'm not sure.
