Old Erroneous Invalid City Auto Property Tax Sold To Debt Collector

I do not live in the USA at this time but keep a Personal Mail Box there for Banking and Social Security. I received a letter from a debt collector requesting payment for property taxes on automobiles that is over $1,000.

1) The taxes were paid.
2) The erroneous delinquency is 15 years old.
3) I do not have checks and I have checked with my bank and they do not have copies that go back 15 years.
4) I have not lived in the city/the state it is in for 15/13 years.
5) The personal mail box is in a different state on a different cost.

Can they legally sue me for a debt they purchased (valid or not) that is 15 years old?

I would think not, but wondered if there was some type of loop hole if they purchased the debt from a cities tax department.

If they tried to sue me it would be financially prohibitive to fly to the USA and get a motel room to fight the claim in court.
