This forum helped me immensely with my own credit errors several years ago, and now I'm back asking a new question for my daughter.
She has received ONE "bill" from a collection agency for an "amount due" and an account number that doesn't match anything she owes. She's pretty sure she might know what it is for, but the amounts don't match. In addition, since she is woefully unemployed (only made $3000 last year), she had previously made payment arrangements with the suspected OC and I have been PAYING this AS AGREED every month without fail.
She called the OC and was told that the woman we had been dealing with had left, but they had a record of our payments. They admitted they were not supposed to "take less' but couldn't find a record that it was sent to collections. However, they did say it may have been, and this woman's records were not "clear". She gets 4-5 calls DAILY from a number she doesn't recognize (only a city/state) and since her cell charges her by the call, she wouldn't answer the call. I looked up the number and finally found it on a "scam call" site, but one comment DID list this collector's name. That was the ONLY place I could find that tied this number to the creditor.
I advised her to DV the collection agency, which she did and got her green card back. The calls have not stopped, even though she requested such in her letter in addition to identifying who the OC actually WAS. She also has had no contact in writing from this company at all in a month. She also asked them to confirm that they were, in fact, permitted to collect in our state since the original debt was in a different state and they may have chosen someone NOT allowed to collect here.
Therefore, here are my questions:
1. What should her next step BE?
2. I'm getting a lump sum payment for a job I did, and I was planning on paying this off for her in February.........SHOULD I pay this off to the OC since they're clearly accepting our monthly checks anyway?
