Debt purchased then sold back?

Hi,

I recently got divorced. We had a joint account and I was the primary. I should have known better, but I did not cancel it. Now it is over $11,000. It was with Credit Card Company A. By the time I found out, some time had passed. I contacted Credit Card Company A who said that they no longer can do anything that it is with Collections Agency A.

I talked to Collections Agency A and told them that I needed to wait because my Ex was filing for Bankruptcy and said this would be taken care of (turned out to be wrong and lie...).

In the meantime, I got a call from Collections Agency B.

Then Collections Agency C who could reduce the debt.

Then Collections Agency D.

I told them all that I was not going to do anything until I found out what was going on and well, I found out that the Bankruptcy Lawyer even told her it would not be taken care of.

I just got a call now from someone who works for Company A (the original one), now saying I need to pay it in full immediately. I just do not have that much money and told them I need to see some kind of validation letter because I have been contacted by numerous other agencies and was told by Company A that they no longer had control over the account (which doesn't make sense why they are now calling me).

My question is this, is it typical for a Company to sell the debt to a Collections Agency or multiple ones? Is it typical for them to buy it back (not sure if that is the right wording)? I am not denying that I am going to have to take care of this, but something just seems very "off" with how multiple agencies have contacted me, offered lower amounts, the credit card company said it was out of their control but is now the one calling me...
